MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP PROGRAM

The Seed Fund is thrilled to open applications for the 2027 Management Workshop Program, a national professional development program for up to 35 artist managers and self-managed artists.

Created by artists for artists, the program began in 2006 as a way to bring emerging artist managers and self managed artists together with industry leaders to share resources, impart wisdom and create new national networks. 2027 marks the 21st anniversary since the first management workshop.
The Seed Fund was co-founded by John Butler and Danielle Caruana (Mama Kin), and is led by Managing Director Stacia Goninon. The Management Workshop Program remains the only national program catering to self managed artists as well as artist managers, placing artists and managers at the centre of contemporary music industry.

Research from the Association of Artist Managers (AAM) shows that for every $1 invested in artist management, $19.94 is returned to stakeholders, which shows the significant economic and cultural value of well-trained managers.

The Seed Fund and the Management Workshop Program are funded by private philanthropic donors and Music Australia.

See below for full details about the program and how to apply

"In nearly 2 decades of making music professionally, I have never encountered a space like this workshop. The care taken and energy given by the facilitators and special guests was empowering and restorative and the information, resources and networking opportunities provided have given me exactly what I need to be re-energised to continue my career in music and reimagine the way in which I'm going to do it. I only wish I'd attended sooner!"  Nick Bryant-Smith

APPLICATIONS OPEN 21st OCTOBERAPPLY NOW PREVIEW QUESTIONS (PDF)
The program runs in two stages:
  • The intensive: a five day, live in immersion in regional NSW, bringing participants together for a facilitated and structured program of workshops, panels and peer learning. Industry leaders share insights on best practices, emerging trends and new business models.
  • The mentorship: during the intensive, participants are assigned to small groups, each guided by a Seed Fund managemenmt workshop alumni mentor. This mentor continues to support them for 12 months post workshop.

This two stage design gives participants time to integrate workshop insights and knowledge, supported by a small group and an alumni mentor who offer both accountability and peer support. Participants build interstate and territory networks with alumni, peers and industry leaders and are empowered to challenge inherited standards, innovate and become co-designers of the industry they want to operate within.

Program outcomes
Over 21 years, The Seed Fund has delivered 14 Management Workshop Programs, supporting over 360 careers. Alumni have gone on to manage some of Australia’s most successful artists, and many now return as mentors to the next generation.

“The Seed is an intensive music industry survival skills program that embodies the spirit of sharing, generosity, vulnerability and resource swapping. It shows by example that we are better together, and instils a sense of common purpose and connection in a notoriously siloed industry. I wish I could do it every year."  Tyler McLoughlan

“This program has changed my life. THE SEED is a 5 day workshop that will give you rocket fuel for a connected, confident and holistic career in management. I have left with a sense of unflappable confidence… by the end of the week, I had a whole cohort of brand-new contacts that I 100% believe will be in my corner for life.”  Lucy Rash

  • 18+ years old.
  • An Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident.
  • An active artist manager or self managed artist, creating original music.
  • Have two years’ experience working at a national level. This doesn’t need to have been full time.
  • Responsible for making executive financial decisions on behalf of your artist/s.
  • Available for the full five day intensive (14–19 May 2027) and able to get yourself to your closest major domestic airport.
  • Available for the 12 month mentorship from May 2027 - May 2028 (remotely online).

You must submit an application by 5pm on Friday 27 November 2026 to be considered for this program.
You'll need

• One page CV and a recent headshot
• 100 word bio
• A song, press image and video for your main artist.
• To articulate your managememt career objectives, critical career timing and professional challenges.
• Two industry referees

"The Seed Fund immersion is a rare and genuinely considered space for managers and self-managed artists. Having worked in artist management for over 15 years, I came in with a strong network and experience base, but I still found the content both relevant and, importantly, fresh... In terms of outcomes, the connections were invaluable. This can be an isolating field... The immersion created a strong, trusted network of peers  people I would genuinely consider collaborators and co-conspirators moving forward." Emily Murphy-O’Neill

“Attending The Seed was THE most important and formative week of my early career. I was able to ask all the questions I had about the business (but was too afraid to ask) and formed close relationships with peers and experienced managers. It gave me the confidence to pursue management as a career and I retain lifelong friends, tools, and knowledge from that week.”  Andrew Stone 2023 AAM Manager of the year, CEO Chugg Music
Selection ProcessApplications are assessed by a peer review panel of industry experts, advising The Seed Fund executive team.

The assessment involves:
• How relevant the program is to your current career goals and challenges
• Your overall management experience
• Critical timing in your artist's or your own management career
• Your readiness for a national program

Each cohort brings together diverse voices from across Australia: both regional and metro, and a mix of career stages.

“The Seed workshop was a formative experience that reshaped my understanding of what it means to be an efficient, empathetic, and successful artist manager teaching me that true leadership in this role lies in balancing strategic thinking with deep emotional intelligence and unwavering support for the artist’s vision.”  Chris Bettiol

“I’m mid level in my career. I found this the perfect intensive to top up knowledge to near expert level in a wide section of topics managers deal with. I couldn’t have had that many meetings over a year. Made that many person connections that are as genuine and hopefully build on being long term relationships.”  Taylor James

FAQs

What does the grant cover?
If you’re successful, the Seed Fund will cover:
The intensive: The Seed Fund will cover your flights (if you’re based outside NSW), ground transport, twin-share accommodation and meals while you are on site. You just need to get yourself to your closest major domestic airport.
The mentorship: The 12-month mentorship with your Seed Fund alumni mentor is included at no cost to you.
I've applied before. Can I apply again?
Yes. Previous applicants can re-apply.
Do I need to be working full time as an artist manager or self managed artist?
No. Meeting your eligibility requirement means you need two years experience but this does not need to be at a full time workload.
Where is the intensive held?
On site in regional NSW. If you are selected, you just need to get yourself to and from your closest major domestic airport.
Will I get feedback on my application?
Unfortunately, as a small team receiving a high volume of applications, we’re unable to provide individual feedback. We genuinely appreciate the time and care that goes into every application, and we encourage you to apply again in future years.
How are applications assessed?
By a peer review panel of industry experts, advising The Seed Fund executive team.
Where is the 12 month mentorship held?
Your 12 month mentorship is conducted via chat threads and monthly meetings which can be attended remotely.
Will I be able to work during the intensive?
We understand that your workload won’t stop during the intensive however, we ask that you attend to this outside of the allocated sessions.
We recommend putting an autoreply on your email, and making sure that your colleagues are aware that your availability will be limited. The intensive is aptly named, sessions often run from 8:30am until 7:30pm.
What if I need my own room during the intensive?
We are unable to offer single rooms.
What if I have access needs?
If you are successful we will arrange a time to discuss your specific needs. We carefully select our venues to ensure physical accessibility needs can be accommodated.
What are my chances?
The program is highly competitive. We’re able to offer places to approximately 14% of applicants. In a typical year more than 35% of applications are deemed exemplary.

Each cohort is carefully curated to bring together diverse perspectives from regional and metro areas across Australia and a mix of career stages. We consider a mix of readiness, experience, timing and merit.

If you aren’t successful this time, it doesn’t mean your application wasn’t strong, and we encourage you to apply again.
